A Brighter Future for Mrs. Nithya

A Brighter Future for Mrs. Nithya image

Mrs. Nithya lives in a Dalit community. She is a widow, the only breadwinner of the family, and works as a landless agricultural labourer. Her two daughters are studying in the government high school. Her thatched house was severely damaged during the monsoon of 2024. She and her daughters lived for 8 months with a leaky roof. As a result, even her daughters were miserably affected in their academics. Ms Benitta of the Kalangarai staff collected data on the damage. After reviewing her needs, Kalangarai provided her with the finances (Rs. 10,000/$112) to repair her house. Today, her family lives in a safe and weather-resistant dwelling.

During 2025, Friends of Kalangarai supported 33 women with funds to repair or rebuild their damaged thatched and dilapidated houses. This initiative not only improved their physical safety but also boosted their confidence, dignity, and independence, enabling them to face future hardships with greater resilience.

With $3500 we can support an additional 30 women whose houses are desperately in need of repair. Even a small donation can go a long way in improving the living conditions and well-being of a widowed or single woman and her family.
